Media and Messaging for Earth Day

We encourage you to connect to themes of stewardship, justice and faith in your Earth Day messages and activities. Our current “Working Towards Sustainable Communities” materials and suggested actions, as well as those from previous Earth Days, touch on these underlying themes in a variety of ways. We want the media and general public to see how our practical responses to environmental issues and climate change challenges are deeply rooted in our Unitarian Universalist religious values, especially our commitment to justice and our care for Earth. We believe that casting the work of building resilient, equitable, and sustainable communities and leading sustainable lifestyles as religious issues is a highly effective way to reach and mobilize a powerful constituency.

Also, please keep in mind that working towards the realization of just, sustainable, resilient communities and lifestyles, and respecting and restoring the environment are the goals; events and media attention are tactics for reaching them. Advancing the goals without media attention is always preferable to media attention that doesn’t advance the goals. The media is most interested in stories with one or more of the "Four Cs": Controversy, Conflict, Contradiction, or Colorful Language/Characters. Be sure to address the religious and moral dimensions of the issue you are addressing, and explain how your event arises from our UU values.

“Publicizing Environmentally Friendly Programs” (download PDF), from the 2009 Green Sanctuary Manual, will be helpful.

Sending Photos. We love photos! Please follow these tips to increase the likelihood of your photo being featured on the UUMFE website:

  • Choose photos that clearly illustrate your event. Dark, grainy, and distant shots may not add as much to a story as a clear, close-up or action shot.
  • Send your photos to office@uuministryforearth.org with a description of the image, the image’s permission information (photographer’s name or the name of the person or organization authorizing reproduction of the image), and the name of your congregation.

Submitting Stories. It is great that you decided to take action. Share your story to inspire others! We will feature stories from Earth Day on the UUMFE website and in upcoming newsletters. Please submit your stories, using our registration form or by e-mail (with photos) to office@uuminiastryforearth.org.

The generosity of individual donors and members make the work of UU Ministry for Earth possible. Please consider making a donation today to help us continue this important endeavor. Thank you.
