Letters and Endorsements

November 2017:  Letter to U.S. Congress "to express our profound concern about the slow pace of the U.S. response to hurricane affected communities in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Cuba and the wider Caribbean.”  Letter is in partnership with Church World Services.

August 2017:  Letter calling for the DOJ to rescind the demand for information related to the J20 website used to organize protests on Inauguration Day, 2017.  

May 2017: Letter to President Trump, Secretary of State, EPA, Treasury and Commerce, and Chairman of Senate Foreign Relations Committee urging them to remain a signatory to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Paris Agreement and to fulfill our commitments under that agreement. 

March 2017:  Letter to all members of US Congress with environmental, health, labor, faith, community, business, and advocacy organizations and elected officials urge our elected representitives to actively resist all effort to defund the EPA, eliminate or reduce its enforcement capabilities, or weaken our bedrock environmental laws and regulations.

March 2017:  Letter to all members of US Congress about the resolution introduced by Rep. Elise Stefanik (NY-21) and sixteen* other Republican members of Congress that affirms the impacts of climate change, acknowledges that human activity has contributed to these changes, and calls on Congress to work constructively on solutions.  Letter was initiated by Friends Committee on National Legislation and signed by multiple faith organizations.

January 2017:  Letter to the California South Coast Air Quality Management Board (SCAQMD), which regulates air pollution standards for the counties of Los Angeles and Orange, and part of San Bernardino and Riverside, is finalizing its Air Quality Management Plan, which is does so every four years.  The letter emphasized the need for clear plans to supply air quality improvements to the most vulnerable populations - elderly, children, and economically disadvantaged neighborhoods.  This is a partnership with Interfaith Power and Light.

October 2016:  Letter to President Obama urging the administration to listen to the recommendations of the Department of Homeland Security Advisory Committee on Family Residential Centers. These recommendations were presented at its final meeting on October 7, 2016 and call for an immediate end to the practice of detaining Central American children and families seeking asylum in the United States.  

May 2016:  Letter to our national legislators asking them to do four things: Stop fracking now, keep fossil fuels in the ground, stop dirty energy, and make a quick transition to 100% renewable energy. Letter is from a coalition of faith leaders and other organizations by CleanEneryMarch.org, a public witness event on July 24th at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.

May 2016:  Letter to Senator Murkowski opposing federal energy bill that expands fracking and oil & gas development (Energy Policy Modernization Act - S 2012).  "Expediting the build-out of fossil fuel infrastructure takes us in exactly the wrong direction. . ." 

March 2016:  To Secretary of State John Kerry asking him to condemn the murder of Honduran Lenca indigenous leader Berta Cáceres and take all necessary measures to ensure that the Honduran State fulfils its human rights obligations. Co-signed with the Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala/NISGUA.

February 2016:  Press release from the Washington Interfaith Staff Committee Energy and Environment Working Group expressing disappointment in the Supreme Court decision for a stay of the Clean Power Plan.  The UUA also co-signed the release.

July 2015:  Endorsement of an interfaith climate conference at the University of San Francisco jointly organized by California Interfaith Power and Light.

July 2014: To Detroit Mayor Michael Duggan, DWSD Director Sue McCormick, and Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr asking them to restore water to the most vulnerable households in Detroit and to stop further shutoffs to those households. UUSC and UUA originated petition.

June 2014: To  the International Declaration on the Future of the Arctic, authored by Greenpeace.

April 2013: To Sect. of State John Kerry asking State Dept. Inspector General to investigate conflict of interest of the contractors used for the Keystone XL pipeline impact statement.

November 2012: To President Obama asking to protect the Greater Canyonlands per 2009 Action of Immediate Witness

October 2012: Support for the Tar Sands Blockade in Winnsboro, TX to stop construction of the TransCanada’s Keystone XL pipeline.

June 2012: To Ken Salazar, US Secty. of the Interior, regarding exclusion of greenhouse gas pollution from regulation under the Endangered Species Act.

April 2012: Supported Earth Week "Call to Action" by Interfaith Moral Action on Climate Change (IMAC), based on the National Climate Ethics Campaign, and issued a press release.

March 2012: An interfaith letter to the House of Representatives advocating support for legislation for an amendment to the surface transportation bill, the RESTORE the Gulf Coast States Act.

October 2011: An interfaith letter to the Senate, House and President Obama in defense of the Clean Water Act.

September 2011: Became a partner with the "Just Label It" campaign protecting the consumer's right to know.

August 2009: To Ambassador Todd Stern, Special Envoy on Climate Change, U.S.Department of State regarding the U.S. position within the international climate negotiations currently taking place under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), due to culminate this December in Copenhagen.
